Dear Pops,

As you probably hurd, ol´ Lincoln took his oath for a second term in office. Looks like he´s extending an olive branch out to dem stinkin´ rebs. Guess we´ll see how that works out. Sounds like he´s pretty confedent that this war is gonna end in a union victory. Finnaly! I thought this bloody war was never gonna end!

Then there was the battle at Saylor´s Creek. Lee was retreatin´ and we had outnumbered ´im bad. Hurd that bout one third of Lee´s whole army had to surender! Almost had to feel bad for the ol´ man, I mean, my god! His whole army was dissolving!

But our troops held strong and we surronded dem rebs. Nutin´ left to do then for ol´ Lee but surender. He´d be an insane fool if he didn´t! He and General grant met in this ol´ house to negosiate the terms of surender. My troops and I started rejoicin´ an broke out in cheers as General Grant finnally exited with Lee, but Grant silenced us.

I guess they´re part of our country again, or at least that´s how Lincoln wants it. Ain´t gonna be no easy task tho, you can´t go around shootin´ thousands of people to the ground and then expect everything to get better right away. It´s gonna take time.

Meanwhile, I can at least rejoyce that this long, bloody war is over and I can finnaally return to you and the rest of my beluved family. God bless! How I have missed you and I canot wait to return home to my normal way of life. But, I understand that things will never truly return to the old ways after this war. No, the close of this war marcs the start of new beginning for our cuntry, and I can only hope it be better than the last.

I just receeved news of Lincoln´s fate. He was a gud president, a gud neighbor and friend, and I am incredably disheartened to hear that he will not be with us in these times of recunstrucsion for our nation. God, just when I thot that the worst of it was over. Guess it just comes to show how this war is nowhere close to over yet. It sure is a shame he won´t get to see the fruits of his work in reforming and unifyiing the country.

I´ll despise the man that killed him till the day I die. Good thing they were able to find the bastard in some ol´ barn and put ´im in his place. I´ll miss ol´ Lincoln, he was a gud, kind man, but I guess not all peeple see him the same way I do.

I am so reddy to return home to u and mi famili so we can navegate this new cuntry tugether. No mater what becomes of this country, I am asured that we will find a way to liv thru it all, together again.

See you soon, dear Father,

Thomas Norton
